Learning English can be a tricky skill to master: it takes a long time and a lot of practice to learn any new language, especially if you don’t live in a country with a lot of native speakers. Luckily, Bogota is an increasingly cosmopolitan and global city, therefore there are more and more English speakers available to help you to practice speaking English on a regular basis. However, if you still haven’t made friends with a native speaker, there are plenty of places you can go to in order to chat English and practice conversation ’til your heart’s content: here are some of the best spots…

- The BBE Conversation Club: Let’s Talk About…
Okay, we’re biased, but this conversation club, run weekly by BBE, is held by professional English teachers, so you know you’re getting a good (and totally free) service. Held every Wednesday between 6-8pm at the Tierra Santa bar (Calle 71 #10-47, barrio Quinta Camacho Bogotá), ‘Let’s Talk About…’ focuses on a different primary conversation topic each week (for instance, the next three topics are ‘Food’, ‘Dar Papaya’, and ‘Travel’), and then, over the course of the two hour session, moves on to a variety of topics. A great way to practice conversation on a regular basis with professionals, meet new people, and enjoy a good beer at the same time, the BBE Conversation Club should be your first port-of-call to practice your English.
- Gringo Tuesdays, La Villa
This Bogota institution has been going for over 5 years now, and has helped thousands of foreigners and Colombians to meet, interact, and practice their respective second languages. Not strictly speaking an English speaking club, Gringo Tuesdays is still dominated by people either practicing English or Spanish. The format is simple: between 5:30pm and 9pm this club is given over to a giant cultural exchange and convo club – turn up, sit at the table flying the flag of the country whose language you want to practice, and get ready to talk, laugh and yes, drink if you feel like it! Held every (you guessed it) Tuesday in the Zona, a second location, the Wednesday Speakeasy has recently opened it’s doors in Candelario Bar in La Candelaria.
- Dame tu Lengua, A Seis Manos
This relatively new language exchange takes place at A Seis Manos (Calle 22 #8-60) at various different times (follow their Facebook for more information). Like Gringo Tuesdays, it’s not simply an English speaking club, but the chance to choose which language you want to practice, and interact with native speakers and fellow learners of that language. There’s a great, friendly atmosphere, and you will be able to meet a lot of new and interesting people while speaking English at the same time.

- Couchsurfing and Internations
These two organizations both promote cultural diversity and exchange, and both a quite active within Colombia’s capital: sign up to either one on their websites and you can keep an eye out for cultural and language exchange events where you can meet and interact with a variety of (probably) interesting people from all around the world. These vents take a variety of forms, but most are informal meet-ups in bars and coffee shops, where people come to meet new people, speak new language and ideally, make new friends; and, as we said, having some native speaking friends is a great way to jump-start your English speaking level.
